Have you identified problems with your plumbing but don’t know how to fix it? Discover some steps to solve noise, low pressure, slow drains or excessive water use. In this article we have provided you some of the simple steps for troubleshooting the plumbing issues and fixing them.

High Water Bill

The high water bill is caused due to the below given reasons.

  • Dripping
  • Leaks
  • Listen to the discharge
  • See the Water Meter

Now let us learn about them in details

Dripping

It may seem simple, but dripping wastes a large amount of water. Listen to the dripping noises and turn off the faucets accordingly. Hence dripping may lead to an increase in water bill significantly.

Leaks

Look under the sinks, baseboards and pipe fitting. Some small leaks can cause an increase in water bills.

Listen To The Discharge

Observe if the discharge is not activated for a longer time than it should, or if it keeps making noise even if no one has triggered it.

Open and close the valve fully to determine if there are problems with the discharge. It may be that even when closed, they still allow water to pass through.

See The Water Meter

The water meter  is mainly used for the purpose to note the amount of water used.

Turn off all the taps in the house to ensure that nothing is using water, and note the number displayed on the water meter.

After an hour without using the water, see if that number has changed by itself. If there is any change, your plumbing system may have leakage problems.

Insufficient Drainage

To identify the drainage issues you must consider the below mentioned steps

  • Check the drains
  • Extent of the problem
  • Where the water goes

Check The Drains

Some of the problems in drains are caused due to the low water pressure, frequent return of water, humid areas near water walls that contain drains and unusual sounds which are caused when water is drained.

Extent Of The Problem

If the problem is isolated, it is likely to be a poor connection between the drainpipe and the main. It may be a siphon or partially clogged pipe.

Where The Water Goes

Observe where the water is drained. Usually they pass through connections, connect to collection pipes and reach the sewer network.

In case of problems, pour hot water into drains that do not work properly. Hot water can unclog pipes by  dissolving substances.

If necessary, use cleaning products. There are products on the market that are capable of dissolving hair, remnants of soap, grease and other items which causes clogging.

Tips

  • Examine the drain systems carefully and periodically. Both inlet (clean water) and outlets (depleted water).
  • Pay attention to the location of the discharges, in case of an emergency close them and avoid problems.
  • Isolating hot or cold water pipes prevents unnecessary expenses and can reduce bills.

Precautions

In the past, iron pipes were used in buildings. Today plastic tubes have been adopted by default. It is important to replace old pipes to prevent the materials from degrading and contaminating the water.

Read the labels of the chemicals used to prevent them from clogging the pipes.
